Magic in Books

On a hot July afternoon, while walking along the boardwalk with our two oldest sons, I nearly passed by a bookshop without going in.  This was rare for me, but the bookshop is located under the boardwalk, and one of our sons was in a stroller at the time.

“Lor, aren’t we going in?” my husband, Ted, asked.  Still moving forward, I answered, “No, I guess not." It seemed too much trouble to make our way down the wooden stairs with the buggy in tow.

Giving it a second thought, I stopped in my tracks and said, “Ya know what, I guess I will go in for just a second.”

I headed down the large boards into the shop.  It’s been a favorite of mine for as long as I can remember.  Shells, books, and the slightly musty scent of the old store greeted me like an old friend, giving me a cozy, familiar feeling as I started a quick whirl around the displays.

It was only a moment before I heard the sound of stroller wheels rounding the corner and making their way toward me.  Ted and the boys decided to join me “Down Under."  “Find anything?” Ted asked.  “Nothing’s jumping off the shelves, “I said, letting out a small, but hopeful sigh.

No sooner the words came out of my mouth and a book literally jumped off the shelf and into my arms.  Ted and I exchanged surprised looks.  “I have to buy this, don’t I?” I asked out loud.

The book that jumped into my arms that summer afternoon was Paul Cuelho’s, The Alchemist.  Published by Harper One, this was the first kind of enchanted novel I had ever read.  It was also the first book that seemed to "choose me"—inspiring and stirring in me a quest of my own and reminding me just how magical books and the universe can be.

The Alchemist is a tale of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who is on a quest to find a worldly treasure.  His travels lead him on an adventure filled with omens and self-discovery.  It is a story of the heart that will stick with me always.
